I love this encouragement to keep the party going until the 13th unexpected guest shows up to hang his hood on the hook in your hobbit hole hall. (Thorin, in Bilbo's case, if I'm not mistaken.)
I need that reminder because I am impatient and the work is indeed painful. Mediocrity offends me, especially my own, but oh how I want to "learn the things I didn't know to ask."
I'll hang on to this angle on clearing away dishes, too, and invite my inner Martha to join my inner Mary in sitting down a little longer.
Love this “I know it goes against the spirit of the age. But maybe, instead of being efficient, you could try being hospitable”
I’m in a process of reflecting on our western culture compared to heavens culture and some of the tightly woven aspects we need to unpick and unravel to find greater freedom, creativity and wholeness.
Being “efficient” is such a powerful driver of this age. It subtly pressures us in so many realms. Thanks for helping me give words to this tension and to instead seek hospitality for writing, for ideas, for meal sharing.
This blessed me so much! "But consider what might happen if, instead of shutting down those not-great-yet ideas, you sat with them and said, “Welcome! I’m so glad you could make it. Tell me about yourself." I naturally talk that way to my friends who come to my home. What a lovely idea to talk that way to my own ideas! I plan to do that.

The “rationale of the age” might be a better pancake vs the “spirit”. We sure like the idea that we are being reasonable. Spirit is misunderstood and mistrusted by our reason. As creatives we know better and do better (hopefully). We can flow between the two and if we are lucky, dance occasionally. I’m going to seek out that Cleese book now. More cheerful creation is exactly what I need! Thanks!
I never thought of how inefficient hospitality is before reading this, but it is a different mindset for sure. I really enjoyed this article and the comments. Thank you! 🥞
With this post you've simultaneously called out the spectre of hurry and efficiency that haunts me and you've opened a lovely door to an enchanted encounter with hospitality in my creative act (and when I have guests over 😬). Thank you, Jonathan Rogers!

Well said!
Makes a lot of sense! And encouraging to know since I'm on my 4th book.
My mom always said, First pancake is for the dogs.

Off to find the Cleese book as well! Thank you for this piece!
