Once I was in a jungle village in Ecuador. (Maybe I’ll tell you more about it in Inktober 2024). While kicking around a grassy, tree-y area on the edge of a village, I was amazed to see a parrot perched on a tree limb about thirty yard away. This was one of the native jungle parrots I had seen in the Birds of South America reference book. I had a camera with me, so I snapped a picture. The parrot didn’t move, so I took a few steps closer and snapped another picture. I stepped closer still and took another picture. It didn’t bother the parrot at all. Apparently I was the first human being this beautiful jungle #beast had ever seen. He hadn’t learned to fear me. I figured I would keep snapping closer and closer close-ups until the parrot flew away. When I was close enough to touch the bird, a little village boy came up behind me. He asked, “Do you like my parrot?”
